Why Is Cyber Security Training Important?

Cyber security breaches due to human error cost companies millions of dollars in losses every year. According to IBM’s 2019 Cost of Data Breach Report, nearly half (49 percent) of cyber security breaches were linked to human error. Don’t let this happen to your company.

Taking the time to educate your employees on how to identify and avoid spam, or why it’s essential to use strong passwords, is the first step in battling security threats. After all, if your team members don’t know how to identify malware or phishing scams, how can they help protect the company?

Cyber awareness training is something we recommend and offer to businesses of any size. Our IT company is here to help protect you, your business, and the well-being of your employees.

Understanding Different Common Types of Cyber Threats

Cyber threats come in many forms, but the most common tend to be malware. Unfortunately, malware also presents one of the easiest ways for your network security to be compromised. All it takes is for one employee to click a bad link in an email or download an attachment, and your entire system could become inoperable.

Phishing is also another common cyber threat. If you’ve ever received an email that says something like, “Your payment method did not go through” and asks to input your payment again, it was likely phishing. These emails can be extremely persuasive, so don’t feel embarrassed if you’ve fallen for one in the past. Our cyber security training can help you learn how to identify these emails and keep you or your team from being “hooked.”

How to Identify and Report Security Threats

Once you’ve gone through cyber security awareness training, you and your team will be better equipped to identify and report security threats.

For example, when a phishing or malware-infected email arrives in an employee’s inbox, cyber awareness training will help them look for crucial identifiers to avoid an attack. Here are a few examples of what to check for:

  • A legitimate email domain. Did you get an email that looks like it’s from a big company like Apple or Google? The email address should look authentic and not contain any extra spaces or numbers.
  • Spelling errors. If you spot these in headlines, main text, or if it has odd grammatical choices, delete it.
  • Suspicious links. When an email asks you to “click here” for more info or to resolve an issue, hover over the link and see if it directs to a legitimate location.

Best Practices for Password Security

Passwords are something that all of us are guilty of taking lightly. Whether that means we reuse the same one (or variations of it) over multiple platforms or write them down in a notebook, there are always ways to improve password hygiene in your company.

We teach password security with cyber security training, but there are simple practices you can put into effect at your business to help right away.

  • Mandate password changes every 60 to 90 days.
  • Implement multi-factor authentication for any company logins.

Enforce a no-written password policy, even with IT needs—everything should be done over the phone!

What Our Customers Are Saying

A Great Support Company

I had the pleasure of working with Amaxx for two years while I was managing the IT for a large community. IT was just one "small" part of my job, so I really had limited hours allotted to take care of the 60+ workstations and servers. We also needed to upgrade some parts of our infrastructure to deal with the increasing demands of our clients, expand our Wi-Fi, and get better use of our medical charting systems. The team at Amaxx was always available, and they provided great direction and advice. They always considered our bottom line in the process, and followed through until everything was completed. For our regular/daily operations I really had no concerns because Amaxx is a great IT vendor, and I knew that I could rely on them. My favorite service is their 24-hour monitoring.

Working at a 24-hour facility, it is nice to go home and actually not fret over "what could happen." If anything went wrong with our server, it was the Amaxx crew getting wake-up calls in the middle of the night... not me. I came into work a few mornings and they were already there to repair some problems or do a necessary upgrade. They have always gone above and beyond and are very friendly as well.
